Homes Ahoy! These 5 Fabulous Floating Houses Are Pure Magic

As the weather gets warmer across the U.S., those aquatic fantasies really start to set in. You know the ones. But instead of dreaming about a home near the water, why not consider one actually on the water?

There’s never been a better time to satisfy your inner seafarer, because we’ve found five fantastic floating homes on both coasts—ranging from the affordable $345,000 in Florida to an aspirational $2.5 million in swanky Sausalito, CA.

Hot tubs, laundry rooms, home theaters, loft bedrooms: You won’t believe the fancy features tucked into these upscale homes. Some even have yard-sized decks.

And they’re all tightly moored and docked in calm marinas, so seasickness is nothing to fear.

Even the most committed landlubbers might find themselves attracted to these nautical niceties. It’s all about what floats your boat.

2394 Mariner Square Dr Unit B11, Alameda, CA

Price: $665,000

Alluring in Alameda: Right across the San Fransisco-Oakland Bay Bridge, you’ll find this floating home that has a bit of a quaint barn look to it—perhaps it’s all the shiplap.

The one-bedroom, 1.5-bath structure has some of the best vistas in the calm marina, as this little beauty sits at the end of the dock and takes in views of the Alameda/Oakland Estuary.

The living room in this 962-square-foot dwelling has expansive, double-paned windows in the back. A spacious primary suite is perched above the living room and has the same gorgeous views you can appreciate from the charming deck.

Built in 1970, the dwelling has received a boatload of improvements, including structural upgrades, new carpeting, and a triple-shake tile roof. The whole thing was refurbished in 2017 by Svendsen Marine Works, so it’s all set to “sale.”

2420 Westlake Ave N Unit 4, Seattle, WA

Price: $1,798,000

Sleeping in Seattle: As rom-com fans know, floating homes in Seattle are a whole thing. (The one featured in the movie “Sleepless in Seattle” became famous.)

Beautifully designed, this two-bedroom, 1.5-bath, 1,400-square-foot floating home on Lake Washington is sure to make anyone fall in love.

The place was rebuilt in 2006 from the “logs up,” the listing notes. On the first level, there is a spacious family room with a gas fireplace and a theater projector with a pull-down screen. The secondary bedroom and primary suite are also situated on this level, as is a waterside deck.

Up a lovely hardwood staircase, you’ll find a great room with living and dining areas and a full-sized kitchen with a movable island and stainless steel appliances. And to top it all off, there’s a roof deck with 280-degree views of Lake Washington. How romantic!

25 E Pier, Sausalito, CA

Price: $2,495,000

Swanky in Sausalito: Not merely a floating home, this is more like a floating mansion. It has three bedrooms and 2.5 baths in a roomy, 2,489 square feet of indoor living space, spread over three stories—four if you count the rooftop deck.

This floating home has first-class everything, from the Wolf Range, Miele microwave, and Viking refrigerator to the French oak hardwood floors and glass tiles in the baths. With no shortage of room, you can accommodate 12 people at the spacious dining table. The house even has solar panels on the roof.

15500 NW Ferry Rd Unit 12A /B, Portland, OR

Price: $437,500

Peaceful in Portland: This shingled, Craftsman-style home, originally built in 1920, floats on a river in the small, private Mayfair Moorage. Completely clad in wooden shingles, the 1,770-square-foot house is surrounded by a deck that cries out for reading, fishing, or other tranquil outdoor pastimes.

It features vintage details, such as beamed ceilings, paneled walls, stained-glass windows, and a comfy window seat. But it also has a modern kitchen with a blue, glass-tile backsplash; updated bathrooms; and a laundry alcove with a washer and dryer.

There are two bedrooms and two bathrooms in the floating house, plus a two-story workshop on the other side of the dock. There is also extra living space and a covered area for another boat.

601 Seaway Dr Unit 77, FL

Price: $345,000

Family friendly in Florida: Inside this 1,146-square-foot floating abode, we spied a room with a child’s loft bed, a couple of rooms with built-in study desks, and a primary suite with a double shower and walk-in closets.

There’s also a rooftop party deck with a hot tub, a barbecue, dining and lounging area, and an outdoor projector screen-wall for family movie nights.

Located in Causeway Cove Marina at Fort Pierce, the 2018 build is sheltered from storms and turbulent weather and is conveniently close to all the shopping, nightlife, and restaurants Fort Pierce has to offer. It also has easy access from the parking lot, and you’ll feel safe behind locked, secure gates.
